Many services for Team Foundation Server will stop running when the service account for Team Foundation has expired. For more information, see Change the service account or password for Team Foundation Server. The application-tier server for Team Foundation is unavailable. You should verify whether each required service is running.
The only two options I can see are git and subversion. I tried entering the url using the subversion option and it did ask me for credentials but the correct credentials never worked.

TFS can use either TFVC (Team Foundation Version Control) or Git for the source control part. You don't have to use an external Git server, it has an internal one - with the data stored in the TFS SQL database. You create your first repo when you create the Team Project, but you can add repos later and you can mix TFVC and Git repos in the same Team Project - since 2015.2 I think.
- Note: The information in this article applies to Team Foundation Server 2010. Assuming that you have already installed Visual Studio 2010 on your workstation, perform the following steps: Download and install the Microsoft Visual Studio Team Explorer 2010 - ISO.

- In particular, the Team Explorer plug-in allows the Visual Studio client to connect to Azure DevOps Services and Team Foundation Server (TFS) to support source control, work tracking, build, and test operations.
- Connecting to Team Foundation Server 2015, 2017 or Visual Studio Team Services Visual Basic 6, Visual Studio.NET and Visual Studio 2003 on Windows XP Install Visual Basic 6, Visual Studio.NET or Visual Studio 2003.
- In the subsequent 'Add Team Foundation Server' dialog, enter either the IP address or the domain name of the TFS. Use the default the port and protocol: port 8080 using HTTP; Click 'OK' The new TFS should now appear in the list of TFS's. Click 'Close' Select the desired TFS project from the 'Team Projects' and click 'OK'.
Microsoft is still in the denial and marketing speak phase but TFVC is basically dead, even Microsoft is using Git for all their new repos. I'm ready to bet Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio for Mac will never connect to TFVC.
Edit: I lost my bet for Visual Studio Code, it can connect to TFVC using the Visual Studio Team Services extension since version 1.116.0 (2017/04/12).
